Argentina forward Lionel Messi has made history as the first footballer to participate in six World Cups.

He took the field against Algeria in the opening group match in Kansas City, Missouri, USA.

Five World Cups have been played by Mexicans Antonio Carbajal and Rafael Marquez, Germans Lothar Matthaus and Manuel Neuer, and Cristiano Ronaldo, who is included in Portugal's squad for the 2026 World Cup.

Messi also set a record for most matches played in World Cup history. The match against Algeria was his 27th in the tournament.
