Taiwan President Lai Ching-te said on Wednesday that if given the chance to speak with U.S. President Donald Trump, he would emphasize that China is undermining peace and stability in the region.
Speaking at a press conference marking his second year in office, Lai stated Taiwan's future should be decided only by its people, not external forces.
China considers Taiwan its own territory and has called Lai a "separatist." The U.S. has historically been Taiwan's most important supporter.
Lai stressed that no country has the right to annex Taiwan, and democracy and freedom should not be seen as provocation.
