The U.S. Justice Department has opened an investigation into a group tied to billionaire Reid Hoffman over its partial funding of writer E. Jean Carroll's lawsuits against President Donald Trump, a source said.
The investigation, run out of Chicago, focuses on potential money laundering and obstruction. The source said Carroll is not a focus of the probe.
Hoffman called the accusations "absurdly false" and said Trump hopes to silence opponents. The Justice Department has pursued several investigations against Trump's antagonists.
