A man convicted for participating in the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol has been hired by the Pentagon's counterterrorism office.
According to The Washington Post, Elias Irizarry, who was 19 at the time, received a 14-day prison sentence.
He now works in the counterterrorism branch of the Pentagon's Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict office. The appointment has raised concerns among colleagues.
Sources say Irizarry's position requires access to classified information. He deals with sensitive issues such as embassy security and hostage rescue.
Pentagon press deputy Joel Valdez described Irizarry as a "skilled and patriotic young professional."
Court documents show Irizarry joined the Capitol attack with two friends, later pleaded guilty and expressed remorse.
