China's state broadcaster CCTV has secured the broadcast rights for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a $60 million deal.
According to Hong Kong 01, the agreement was finalized on May 15 after lengthy negotiations. CCTV will have exclusive rights across television, internet, and mobile platforms.
FIFA initially demanded $250-300 million, later reducing the price to $120-150 million. China insisted on $60-80 million, and the two sides agreed on the minimum amount.
The deal covers the 2026 and 2030 men's World Cups, as well as the 2027 and 2031 women's tournaments.
Negotiations with India fell through. FIFA lowered the price to $35 million, but JioStar offered only $20 million. A petition has been filed in Delhi High Court to ensure free-to-air broadcast, with a hearing scheduled for May 20.
The 2026 World Cup will be held from June 11 to July 19 in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
