Pink flamingos in Kenya's Great Rift Valley are losing their vibrant feather color due to changing natural conditions in local lakes.
According to Oxu.Az citing Africanews, scientists link this to rising water levels in the alkaline lakes where flamingos live.
Experts say heavy rains and other natural factors make lake water less salty. This reduces cyanobacteria, the main food source for flamingos.
"The pink color of flamingo feathers is directly related to their diet. When cyanobacteria decrease, the feathers are not as brightly pink," said Paul Gacheru, a representative of Nature Kenya.
Scientists say these changes are already observed in several lakes in the Great Rift Valley, including Lake Elementaita and Lake Bogoria.
Experts report that the reduction in food supply has also led to a significant decline in the number of flamingos in these areas.
