A tragic incident in Northern Ontario, Canada: an 11-year-old boy died after contracting rabies from a bat.
According to the Canadian Medical Association, reported by Daily Mail, the boy was sleeping when a bat landed on his face, covering his mouth and nose. He woke up and threw the animal off.
Parents released the bat but saw no blood or bite marks, so they didn't seek medical help. 19 days later, the boy developed facial numbness, vomiting, and neurological symptoms.
Doctors diagnosed rabies too late. The virus had severely damaged his nervous system. Two weeks of intensive treatment failed.
The family agreed to publicize the tragedy to warn others. Doctors emphasize that bat bites can be microscopic and any contact requires immediate medical prophylaxis.
