Japan's population has experienced a record decline over the past five years.
According to Oxu.Az citing the Yomiuri newspaper, this information was provided by Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara.
Based on the 2025 preliminary census, Japan's population stands at 123,029,524. This is a decrease of approximately 3.09 million compared to 2020.
"According to the survey results, this is the third consecutive census since 2015 showing a decline, with the scale of the decrease reaching a maximum of 2.5%," Kihara noted.
Meanwhile, the population of the Tokyo region, encompassing Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, and Chiba, increased by 71,000 from the previous census to reach 36,986,000. An increase was also recorded in Okinawa Prefecture (0.1%).
Minoru Kihara stated that the government will continue measures to combat population decline. Authorities will support the birth rate, create jobs in regions, develop the economy, and raise wages for young people.
