An unusual marine animal was discovered at Año Nuevo State Park in California, USA.
According to Oxu.Az citing the Daily Mail, the purple-colored seal spotted on the shore amazed locals. Photos shared on social media sparked widespread interest. Some users speculated about genetic mutation, while others suggested environmental pollution.
However, experts clarified the reason: it's molting season for seals in late spring. The animals spend time on red algae washed ashore, whose natural pigments temporarily dye their new fur a deep purple.
Researchers emphasize this coloration is harmless and fades as the fur renews. Each year, about 10,000 northern elephant seals come to Año Nuevo for breeding and molting. Encountering such a vividly colored individual is considered rare.
