The Scottish Parliament has officially backed holding a referendum on independence.
According to Oxu.Az, the government announced this on its social media account.
“The Scottish Parliament has supported calls for a referendum on the country’s independence,” the statement said.
A majority of lawmakers (72 votes in favor, 55 against) backed First Minister John Swinney’s appeal to the UK government.
Swinney called for a decree to be signed under Section 30 of the Scotland Act 1998, which would grant the Scottish Parliament powers to organize an independence referendum.
Swinney is a staunch supporter of independence and leader of the Scottish National Party. He was re-elected as First Minister after his party’s victory in the May 19 election.
Scotland remains part of the United Kingdom.
