The Trump administration will seek public comment on which Chinese goods should be eligible for lower tariffs, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said on Tuesday.
Washington and Beijing have agreed to a joint "Board of Trade" to initially determine about $30 billion of non-strategic goods on which the two countries can lower or eliminate tariffs.
Greer said Section 301 investigations will seek public comments on any proposed measures during a Council on Foreign Relations event. The USTR will issue a Federal Register notice calling for public comment on $30 billion of goods from China that could see modified tariffs.
The trade representative said China expects a certain level of U.S. tariffs that the countries agreed to. Greer added that the administration got what it came for in the Trump-Xi summit, including stability and continued tariffs.
The administration is "mostly" giving up on changing China’s economic model in favor of managed trade, Greer said.
