Two ships of the German Navy are moving towards the Red Sea for a possible mission in the Strait of Hormuz.
This was reported by TASS based on statements by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius to journalists.
"Let me start with good news: while I am speaking here, our minesweeper 'Fulda' and support ship 'Mosel' are passing through the Suez Canal and heading towards the Red Sea," Pistorius said.
According to the minister, the ships were sent to the region to take a ready position for a possible operation in the Strait of Hormuz.
"If necessary, we want to act immediately in the Strait of Hormuz," he added.
Pistorius noted that the deployment of the ships does not require a special mandate from the Bundestag because it takes place within the framework of the European Union's (EU) "Aspides" mission.
"When the conditions are clear, we will apply to the Bundestag for a mandate. It is not yet clear when this will happen," the minister emphasized.
Earlier, Der Spiegel magazine reported that the German government had prepared a draft resolution on the possible participation of the Bundeswehr in a mission in the Strait of Hormuz, and the document will be sent to the Bundestag to obtain a mandate.
