A magnitude 6.4 earthquake has struck the central Atlantic Ocean, northwest of Ascension Island, a British Overseas Territory.
The Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported the seismic event as "destructive."
The US Geological Survey, however, recorded a higher magnitude of 6.6. The quake's epicenter was at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Since the tremors occurred far from land, the risk of tsunami or direct damage to populated areas is minimal.
