England and Wales have recorded their sharpest decline in births since 1977.
According to Oxu.Az, Bloomberg reported this citing the UK's Office for National Statistics.
Experts warn that the country is on the brink of a demographic tipping point – without migration, the local population could begin to sharply decline.
Official statistics show that last year the number of births fell by 1.6% to 585,396. This figure is only 14,408 more than recorded deaths. In comparison, a year earlier the gap between births and deaths was nearly double at 26,064.
The declining birth rate issue affected not only Britain last year but also Germany. Germany recorded its lowest birth rate since World War II. The number of births in this European country has been decreasing for the fourth consecutive year. In 2025, approximately 654,300 babies were born in Germany, which is 3.4% less than the previous year's figures.
