Landmines remain one of the gravest legacies of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict and continue to claim lives long after active hostilities ceased.
Hikmat Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan, announced that since November 10, 2020, 427 people have been recorded as mine victims — 73 killed and 354 injured, including 231 civilians.
From 1991 to date, the total number of landmine victims has exceeded 3,500. Among them, 362 are children and young people, and 38 are women.
Widespread mine contamination severely hinders the safe return of displaced families, reconstruction of liberated territories, economic development, and agricultural recovery. Each mine detected and neutralized not only potentially saves a life but also marks a significant step towards restoration.
Mine clearance is not just a security issue, but a humanitarian necessity and a vital condition for sustainable reconstruction and development.
