One of the notable aspects of the parliamentary election campaign in Armenia is that discussions focus more on Azerbaijan and President Ilham Aliyev's policies than on Armenia itself. MP Vasif Gafarov stated this in an interview with Oxu.Az.
He noted that debates, political actions, and candidates' speeches show that Azerbaijan is the main actor defining the region's political agenda. Armenian political circles and various foreign centers understand that no political project or geopolitical configuration can succeed in the region without considering Azerbaijan's interests and position.
Gafarov emphasized that the upcoming elections are not just a struggle for power; Armenian society is effectively choosing between peace and revanchism. For Azerbaijan, the key issue is not which political force comes to power, but which strategic path the Armenian people will choose. The new realities formed in the region in recent years show that the only path to development, security, and economic cooperation is through peace, and Azerbaijan is the initiator and main architect of this peace agenda.
The MP added that the election campaign shows the Karabakh issue is again becoming a main tool for some political forces. Various candidates and revanchist circles bringing this issue back to the agenda indicates that Armenian society has not completely abandoned the ideology of separatism.
Gafarov stated that official Baku expects amendments to Armenia's constitution after the elections. Another important expectation of Azerbaijan is the final liquidation of all structures operating under the name of Karabakh. Another notable aspect in the context of the elections is the double standards demonstrated by the West.
