Finnish President Alexander Stubb has approved amendments to the Nuclear Energy Act, lifting the long-standing ban on the import and transit of nuclear weapons on Finnish territory.
According to information published on the official website of the Finnish Parliament, the law will come into effect on July 1.
The bill was submitted to Parliament in April. Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen stated that despite the changes, Finland remains committed to its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and other international agreements.
The Nuclear Energy Act, adopted in 1987, prohibited the import, production, storage, and use of nuclear explosives. The amendments aim to align with NATO standards, as Finland joined the alliance in 2023.
