John Bolton, the former US national security adviser, has pleaded guilty in court to mishandling classified information.
According to Oxu.Az, TASS reported this citing the next court session in Bolton's case.
It was stated that Bolton had previously reached a procedural agreement with the prosecution and pleaded guilty to one count of charges. He also agreed to pay a fine of over $2 million.
The former adviser faces up to 5 years in prison. However, the court may also render a verdict without a prison sentence. Initially, Bolton had pleaded not guilty.
Recall that in September of last year, Politico reported that the FBI found classified documents during a search of Bolton's office.
According to the report, the documents concerned weapons of mass destruction, the US mission to the UN, and "strategic communications of the US government." These documents were reportedly found in Bolton's office in downtown Washington.
In August 2025, the FBI searched Bolton's home, after which charges were filed against him.
