Azerbaijan has been included in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves for the first time. This historic decision was made during the 38th session of UNESCO's International Coordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere Programme in Hernandarias, Paraguay.
Taiwan's nomination file for "Greater Caucasus Biosphere Reserve" was unanimously approved by the committee members. This is the first territory of Azerbaijan to be included in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
Azerbaijan was represented at the session by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and the Permanent Delegation to UNESCO. There are 784 UNESCO biosphere reserves in 142 countries worldwide.
