The Azerbaijan Land Transport Agency (AYNA) will pedestrianize several central streets in Baku.
According to Oxu.Az, AYNA released a statement.
In line with President Ilham Aliyev's instructions, the creation of pedestrian zones and corridors in Baku continues.
Recently, Islam Safarli Street, which optimally connects Fountain Square and Winter Park, two large pedestrian zones, was pedestrianized and opened to residents and guests. This well-received project, fully in line with modern urban planning principles, is planned to be extended to areas near Islam Safarli Street.
The Transport Coordination Council has decided to pedestrianize Alimardan Topchubashov, Lev Tolstoy, Yusif Mammadaliyev, Rasul Rza, and Khagani streets. Implementation of the project, based on world experience, will begin in the coming days, making these areas very attractive for locals and visitors.
These streets, featuring 19th-20th century historical buildings, are currently in the center of traffic congestion. Residents and guests cannot explore the historical monuments due to traffic. The sidewalks are narrow, and pedestrian flow is high; the area is effectively used by non-motorized traffic participants. Considering this, these popular pedestrian areas are planned to be completely car-free.
As a result, the total length of pedestrian streets in central Baku outside Icherisheher will significantly increase. This will ensure further development and expansion of the city center's pedestrian infrastructure. Additionally, two independent pedestrian routes will be formed, stretching from Khagani Garden and Fountain Square to Winter Park and Central Park.
Parking spaces on the pedestrianized streets will be relocated to intersecting streets while maintaining accessibility, and additional spaces will be created. At the same time, conditions will be provided for emergency and utility vehicles to access these streets.
