The legendary footballer Pelé's jersey from the 1958 World Cup final is being auctioned. The historic garment is valued at over $6 million.
Oxu.Az reports that the auction house "Sotheby" has released this information.
Only 17 at the time, Pelé scored a double in the final against Sweden, which Brazil won 5-2. The Brazilians had also defeated France by the same score in the semi-finals.
The iconic number 10 jersey will be displayed at Sotheby's new headquarters in Manhattan, the "Breuer" building, starting July 1. The auction is scheduled for July 16, three days before the World Cup 2026 final.
According to experts, this jersey could become one of the most expensive sports memorabilia ever sold. The current record belongs to Diego Maradona's jersey from the 1986 World Cup quarter-final against England, when he scored the "Hand of God" goal. That jersey sold for $9.3 million.
Sotheby's statement says that after the final match, Pelé gave this jersey as a gift to his teammate and close friend, Didi. The historic garment, preserved for years by Didi's family, was finally auctioned off in 2004 for an undisclosed amount.
