The United States imposed sanctions on 11 Cuban officials, including the communications minister and several military leaders, as the Trump administration escalates pressure on the communist-led island.

The designations are part of a broader campaign against Cuba, including efforts to block oil shipments from Venezuela.

The State Department described Cuba's government as corrupt and incompetent, pushing for regime change.

President Trump has effectively imposed a blockade by threatening sanctions on countries supplying fuel to Cuba, causing power outages and economic damage.

The State Department said: 'The United States will continue to counter the Cuban regime.'

Targeted senior officials include Communications Minister Mayra Arevich Marin, National Assembly President Juan Esteban Lazo Hernandez, Communist Party leader Roberto Tomas Morales Ojeda, and army General Joaquin Quintas Sola.

The Directorate of Intelligence of Cuba (DI) was also sanctioned. The interior ministry and National Revolutionary Police (PNR) were designated as well.

On May 1, Trump signed an executive order authorizing sanctions against entities in Cuba's key economic sectors.

Criminal charges are expected to be announced against former President Raul Castro.
