West Nile virus has become established in Berlin, according to scientists from Charité clinic. Previously found only in southern regions, it is now spreading in the German capital.
Researchers examined 24,000 mosquitoes and found that up to 6% carried the virus in 2023—a rate comparable to Southern Europe, where the virus regularly causes illness.
Notably, infected mosquitoes were found not in nature reserves but in densely populated areas: parks, cemeteries, and gardens. Certain bird species in these zones play a key role in spreading the virus.
Most infected people show no symptoms. However, about one in five experiences flu-like symptoms, and 1% develop meningitis, posing a real threat, especially to the elderly.
Virologists estimate that actual infections may be at least 100 times higher than reported numbers. Due to climate change, case numbers are expected to rise further.
