Former Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero (2004-2011) is under investigation for suspected tax crimes and smuggling. The probe follows the discovery of jewelry worth over 1.3 million euros in his office.
According to Spain's National Court, a separate investigation has been opened in connection with financial support for the airline "Plus Ultra."
On May 19, a search of Zapatero's office uncovered various jewelry items from a safe. The origin of the jewelry is unknown, prompting investigations into possible smuggling and tax offenses.
Earlier, Zapatero was summoned to testify on June 17-18 on suspicion of abuse of power. The probe concerns the possible misuse of 53 million euros in government aid granted to Plus Ultra during the pandemic.
