Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed a law removing the Russian language from the list of languages covered by the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.
Oxu.Az reports citing UNIAN news agency.
"The Russian language has been removed from the list of languages to which Ukraine applies the Charter provisions. This is a fair and lawful decision. The language of an aggressor state cannot benefit from protection mechanisms designed to support the languages of indigenous peoples and national communities," said Ruslan Stefanchuk, Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada.
Stefanchuk emphasized that Ukraine protects its state language, respects linguistic and cultural diversity, while depriving Russia of the privileges it has used for years to exert imperial influence.
Under the law, the Charter's provisions will now apply to Belarusian, Bulgarian, Gagauz, Crimean Tatar, Greek, German, Polish, Romanian, Slovak, Hungarian, Czech, and Hebrew languages.
