A US citizen, Yu Min Zin, has been detained in China on suspicion of espionage and threats to national security.
Oxu.Az reports, citing Reuters, that Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian confirmed the detention at a briefing.
Ms. Lin confirmed the detention while answering journalists' questions about a New York Times report last week that Mr. Zin had gone missing in Kunming, southwest China. She added that Chinese authorities had informed the US consulate general in Guangzhou about the coercive measure.
On June 11, the New York Times reported, citing sources, that Chinese authorities detained US citizen Yu Min Zin, founder of the Myanmar Institute for Strategy and Policy, on charges of threatening national security. The scientist had gone missing on June 3 in Kunming, the administrative center of Yunnan province near the border with Myanmar.
