A dead whale found off the coast of the Danish island of Anholt in the North Sea had no GPS transmitter on it.
Morten Abildstrøm, a representative of the Danish Nature Agency, said no electronic devices were found on the animal's body. He personally examined the stranded whale while taking a tissue sample from its tail fin. The sample will be sent to Germany for analysis.
Abildstrøm is 95% confident the whale is a humpback. However, the 12-meter animal is lying on its side and half submerged, making species identification difficult. The whale is located about 75 meters off Anholt's coast and likely died some time ago.
According to the Bild newspaper, officials suspect the whale could be "Timmy," a previously tracked whale released into the open sea about two weeks ago. No signals have been received from its GPS transmitter. Experts consider Timmy's chances of survival very low.
