Extreme heat in Western Europe has caused railway rails to deform and asphalt to melt, leading to train delays, cancellations, and disruptions in transport infrastructure.
According to a UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) official, Jean Rodrigues, the intense heatwave clearly demonstrates climate risks and their impact on transport.
Speaking at a briefing in Geneva, Rodrigues listed examples: "Rail deformation, asphalt melting, traffic light failures, and shipping restrictions on rivers."
By 2050-2080, up to 90% of Europe's rail network will be frequently exposed to high temperatures, with transport facing 10-15 extra days (up to 200 in some areas) above 25°C.
The UN urges states to incorporate climate risks into transport infrastructure planning and management.
