Archaeologists have discovered 302 Roman coins in the Mozovo area, eastern Croatia.
The Zagreb Institute of Archaeology states that the find is linked to a military unit guarding the Danube Limes.
The coins were found during excavations of a Roman watchtower. Most date to the 4th century AD.
Technician Damir Topić said: "We first found one coin, then several in sequence. It was a deliberately hidden stash."
Institute director Marko Dizdar suspects it was a soldier's salary: "Soldiers hid the money during danger but couldn't retrieve it."
Most coins were minted under Emperor Valentinian I (364-375 AD), who was born in nearby Cibalae.
Alongside the coins, fibulae and a fishing hook were found, indicating life at the tower was not just about guard duty.
After restoration, the coins will be handed over to a museum.
