This summer, abnormal heat observed in Europe has not spared the Alps.
According to scientists cited by Reuters, the "glacier melt season" began on June 29 at the Rhone Glacier in southern Switzerland. This process involves the melting of accumulated winter snow and the loss of deeper glacier layers.
Matthias Huss, head of the Swiss Glacier Monitoring Network (GLAMOS), noted that the glaciers are in a dire state for this time of year: "The situation is as critical as in 2022, which was a record warm year," he emphasized.
It is recalled that June was unusually hot across almost all of Europe, with temperatures exceeding 40°C in many countries. The intense heat has also led to fatalities across the continent.
