The US Administration is preparing for a potential regime change in Cuba this summer and is working on military response plans for such scenarios.
According to Oxu.Az, the Axios portal reported this information citing its sources.
It was stated that US President Donald Trump is currently engaged in resolving the situation around Iran, after which he intends to turn his attention to Cuba and determine how to bring about change there.
According to sources, Washington will continue to impose economic sanctions on Havana until all means of influence are exhausted, after which a military option may be considered. Last month, the US Southern Command, whose area of operational responsibility includes Central and South America as well as the Caribbean region, conducted staff exercises to prepare for military operations on the island. The military discussed Cuba's possession of drones and ways to respond to possible unrest.
However, a source from Axios emphasized that no intervention is currently planned or envisaged. "When the president gives the 'go' order, we will be ready for everything," he added.
Meanwhile, according to the portal, the administration has not yet identified Cuban officials who could lead an interim government in Havana if a regime change occurs.
