Canada's broader citizenship rules are attracting strong interest from Americans, data shows. Under the new law, more descendants of Canadians can claim citizenship.

Approvals for proof of citizenship by descent have risen by over 1,000 per month this year, compared to just 275 in December 2025, according to immigration data.

About 48% of the additional approvals through February originated from the U.S. Lawyers say this reflects U.S. political uncertainty.

"It gives our family options," said William Hunnewell, a Seattle resident. "If my kid wants to study in Canada, she can just go."
