At least four people were killed after a major Ukrainian drone attack targeted multiple Russian regions, including Moscow.
Authorities confirmed on Sunday that the overnight strikes were the largest coordinated aerial assault on Moscow in over twelve months.
The cross-border bombardment caused localized infrastructure damage and civilian casualties. Three people died in the Moscow region, and a fourth in the border region of Belgorod.
Moscow regional Governor Andrei Vorobyov said a woman was killed when a residential building was struck in Khimki, north of the capital. Rescuers are searching debris for another person.
Two men were killed in the village of Pogorelki in the Mytishchi district, where several residential high-rises and infrastructure facilities were damaged.
Russian state media TASS reported that air defenses destroyed 81 drones heading toward Moscow since midnight. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said 12 people were injured, most near the entrance to Moscow's oil refinery.
Three houses were damaged near the refinery, but its critical infrastructure remained intact. Sobyanin added that the refinery's technology was not damaged.
Russia's defense ministry announced a total of 556 drones were downed over the country overnight and into Sunday morning.
The heavy volume of debris disrupted local transportation hubs, but key commercial operations continued.
Officials at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport confirmed that drone debris fell on its territory without causing damage.
