A U.S. Senate official removed security funding for President Donald Trump's planned $400 million White House ballroom from a spending package.

The decision by Senate parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough deals a blow to Trump's administration.

Trump says the ballroom will be funded by private donors, but Senate Republicans are seeking $1 billion in taxpayer funding for security upgrades.

Republicans could revise the legislation to gain approval, but if they fail, the funding may be excluded from a $72 billion package.
