U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, a Republican moderate, faces a primary election in Louisiana on Saturday against two popular rivals, including a Trump-backed challenger.
Cassidy drew Trump's ire by voting to convict him in his second impeachment trial in 2021. Polls show him in third place behind Trump-backed Representative Julia Letlow and former Congressman John Fleming.
Cassidy's chances of victory are slim in a state where Trump won over 60% of the vote in 2024. However, Trump could also face embarrassment if his preferred candidate loses.
Cassidy was one of seven Republicans who supported Trump's impeachment after the January 6 attack. He is now one of only three still in office.
Despite having more campaign cash than his rivals, Cassidy's campaign has struggled due to conflicts with Trump.
Political analysts say Cassidy could still emerge from the primary to face a runoff. The seat is expected to remain Republican.
