British Paralympian John McFall could become the first physically disabled astronaut to live in orbit.
According to The Guardian, McFall, who had one leg amputated, is preparing to fly to the Haven-1 space station. This historic mission will take place after the British Space Agency signed a contract with the US startup Vast.
The Paralympian called the upcoming flight an amazing opportunity. During his two weeks in orbit, scientists will study how space and weightlessness affect a body with a prosthesis. The research will also examine modern prostheses equipped with sensors and microprocessors in space.
Additionally, the mission will help researchers better understand diseases like osteoporosis and muscle loss, and develop effective rehabilitation programs in the future.
