An Austrian tourist named Elisabeth lost her leg after a shark attack while snorkeling with her husband in the Galapagos Islands.
The incident occurred near Santa Fe Island. She felt a sharp pain in her right leg while adjusting her camera in shallow water.
The shark tore her calf and bit her left ankle. Two Canadian doctors in the group provided first aid.
Elisabeth was taken to Santa Cruz hospital, where doctors amputated her right calf. Her left leg injuries were minor.
The 30-year-old said: 'I am grateful to be alive. Modern prosthetics are a miracle; I can continue my life.'
She is now learning to walk again with special supports. The shark species remains unidentified.
