On May 20, a ceremony dedicated to Azerbaijan's Independence Day was organized by the Azerbaijani Embassy in Romania at the Grand Ballroom of the Marriott Hotel in Bucharest.
The event was attended by Romanian statesmen, government officials, numerous deputies and senators, heads of diplomatic missions, scientists, cultural figures, media leaders, representatives of the Turkish and Tatar communities, members of the Iranian Azerbaijani community, and compatriots living in Romania.
Ambassador Gudsi Osmanov opened the ceremony, speaking in Romanian about the historical significance of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (1918), the restoration of independence, national leader Heydar Aliyev's services, and President Ilham Aliyev's achievements. He noted that a key document was signed in Washington on August 8, 2025, with US mediation, laying the groundwork for lasting peace in the region.
Romanian Senate President Mircea Abrudean highlighted the importance of May 28, 1918, and recalled that Romania was the second country to recognize Azerbaijan's independence. He emphasized the strategic partnership and joint energy projects.
State Counselor Vlad Ionescu from the Romanian Presidential Administration spoke about cooperation initiated by Heydar Aliyev's 1995 visit, the Southern Gas Corridor, and green energy projects, stressing their importance for European energy security.
State Secretary Ana Cristina Tinca underscored Azerbaijan's geostrategic position, the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations, and support for the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace process.
Marian Neacsu, head of the Romania-Azerbaijan Friendship Group in Parliament, called Azerbaijan one of Romania's best friends, highlighting mutual high-level visits and energy cooperation.
Former President Emil Constantinescu recalled his friendship with Heydar Aliyev, the opening of embassies, and efforts to revive the Silk Road, noting that these plans are now being realized under President Ilham Aliyev.
A photo exhibition showcased reconstruction in liberated territories, the mine problem, tourism potential, and Azerbaijan-Romania relations. The event concluded with Azerbaijani cuisine.
