France and Greek Cyprus have signed a military cooperation agreement, raising tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean. The deal provides a legal basis for French forces to be stationed in Cyprus and conduct joint operations.
Cyprus is strategically located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa. France aims to expand its military presence there to gain better access to the Middle East.
Turkey and Northern Cyprus criticize the agreement, warning it could upset the regional balance. Ankara argues that unilateral moves without resolving the Cyprus issue will create new tensions.
