Danish scientists have developed a 13-second test to predict the likelihood of emerging from a coma.
Researchers at Copenhagen University Hospital created a test that measures the pupils' reaction to light. It helps predict whether consciousness will recover in patients with severe traumatic brain injury.
The study involved 250 patients with brain injuries and 30 healthy volunteers. Automated pupillometry was performed daily for 20 days. Results showed that a more pronounced late pupil response is associated with a higher probability of consciousness improvement within the next seven days.
The test takes about 13 seconds per eye and can be easily administered in intensive care units using existing equipment.
