June 12 marks the martyrdom of Azerbaijan's National Hero Allahverdi Baghirov.
He was a symbol of the First Karabakh War and the resistance in Karabakh.
Allahverdi Teymur oglu Baghirov was born on April 22, 1946, in Aghdam. He studied at Aghdam City School No. 1. He had a passion for sports, especially football, and defended the honor of Aghdam's "Karabakh" football club, later becoming its head coach.
In October 1991, military units in Aghdam were formed under his and his brother Eldar's command. After Eldar's death, he led the battalion.
In January 1992, he conducted a successful operation in Nakhchivanli village, earning the "General Muhammad Asadov" award. His greatest military success was on June 12 in the Aranzamin battle.
During the Khojaly genocide, he played a key role in retrieving bodies and exchanging prisoners. He rescued 1003 Khojaly captives in three days.
Baghirov was martyred in 1992 when his vehicle hit a landmine while returning from Nakhchivanli to Aghdam. He was posthumously awarded the title of National Hero.
