Hantavirus infection poses a double threat for people with heart disease. Uruguayan cardiologist Alexandro Croquer told RIA Novosti that the risk of complications is significantly higher in this group.
He noted: 'Chronic and concomitant diseases greatly increase the risk of complications from hantavirus infection. Heart diseases are no exception. Complications occur more frequently and acutely in these patients.'
The expert warned that hantavirus can cause myocardiopathy, a dysfunction of the heart muscle, which may lead to chronic heart failure.
