The water sector is one of the most affected by climate change.
Oxu.Az reports that these words were spoken by Khayyam Mammadov, First Deputy Chairman of the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency, at an event titled "Early Warning Systems and Climate Resilient Cities" held at the Azerbaijan Pavilion during WUF13.
He stated that climate change, such as floods and heavy rains, are no longer problems of the future: "They are occurring more frequently and becoming more severe each year. These events damage infrastructure, affect homes, and reduce people's quality of life."
The water sector is one of the most affected by climate change. Like many countries, Azerbaijan faces serious risks in this area. Therefore, adaptation is one of our main priorities. In the past, Azerbaijan had about 10-20 rainy days per year. Today, that number has increased several times. To enhance climate resilience, the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency operates in accordance with the national water strategy and other state development programs.
Our work supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals related to clean water, climate action, and environmental protection. At the same time, it contributes to the decisions adopted during COP29 held in Azerbaijan in 2024. We are also developing new adaptation projects together with government agencies, international organizations, and private companies for the upcoming COP31.
He added that they understand that engineering solutions alone are not enough: "Modern technologies and science must become part of water management. We are strategically implementing automated monitoring systems using GEO technologies and real-time data systems to better predict floods and droughts."
