Today is the professional day of medical workers in Azerbaijan. Doctors, nurses, and other healthcare staff are celebrating.
According to the decree signed by national leader Heydar Aliyev on June 4, 2001, June 17 is celebrated annually as Medical Workers' Professional Day.
The history of the holiday dates back to the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. On June 16, 1918, Khudadat bey Rafibeyli was appointed the first minister of health and social security.
In recent years, reforms have been implemented in the healthcare system. The material and technical base of medical institutions has been strengthened, compulsory health insurance has been introduced, and new diagnostic centers have been built.
During the COVID-19 pandemic and the 44-day Patriotic War, medical workers showed great dedication. 44 medical workers died a heroic death, and 159 were injured.
