June 30 is celebrated as National Lovers Day in Azerbaijan. This date marks the wedding of Ilham and Fariza Allahverdiyev in 1989.
During the January 20 tragedy in 1990, Ilham became a martyr. Fariza, unable to bear his loss, committed suicide, closing her eyes forever along with her unborn child.
Unlike many countries, Azerbaijan celebrates Lovers Day on June 30, not February 14. It is a holiday of true love and loyalty.
Ilham was born in Aghdam and lived in Baku. A ship repair plant is named after him. Their wedding was on June 30, 1989, and the tragedy occurred in January 1990.
