Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Vugar Karimov stated that if no action is taken, plastic waste volume could triple by 2060.
He spoke at the "Fighting Plastic Pollution" event held at the Azerbaijan pavilion during WUF13.
Globally, about 430 million tons of plastic are produced annually, most of which becomes waste after short use. About 90% of waste is incinerated or dumped into the environment.
Per capita plastic waste: EU 16 kg, global average 13 kg, Azerbaijan 14-15 kg. In the last 15 years, plastic packaging consumption in Azerbaijan increased 5-fold, production 6.5-fold.
Plastic waste recycling rates: EU 95%, Asia-Pacific 12%, Azerbaijan 14-15%.
