Scientists have recorded an unprecedented event: two humpback whales traveled nearly 15,000 kilometers between Australia and Brazil, covering almost half of the globe.
The study was published in the journal "Royal Society Open Science." This route is the longest documented migration for this species.
The whales were tracked using unique patterns on their tails, which act like human fingerprints.
Researchers analyzed over 19,000 whale photos from the past 40 years using artificial intelligence to compare tail patterns.
One of the whales also broke the previous migration record, which was held by a whale traveling from Colombia to Zanzibar.
