Iranian lawmakers have appealed to the country's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to authorize the development of intercontinental ballistic missiles.
According to Iran's Asriran newspaper, the appeal was signed by 85 parliament members who are skeptical of Washington's position in negotiations for a peaceful resolution to the conflict with Tehran.
Israel's Jerusalem Post reported that analysts from the US Institute for War Studies (ISW) interpreted the appeal as a call to create missiles that could reach the United States.
Former Israeli national security adviser Yaakov Amidror told the publication that any favorable economic conditions resulting from negotiations with Washington could give Tehran the resources needed for such projects.
Among those appealing to Khamenei is Iran's former foreign minister Manouchehr Mottaki, who opposes negotiations with the US.
