Bangladesh's Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman has been elected President of the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly.
According to Oxu.Az citing TASS, 99 out of 190 UN General Assembly members supported his candidacy.
Rahman's opponent was Andreas Kakouris, Special Representative for Multilateral Affairs of the Cypriot Foreign Ministry, who garnered 91 votes.
Announcing the results, the President of the 80th Session, Annalena Baerbock, stated: "Having obtained the required majority of votes, His Excellency Khalilur Rahman is considered elected President of the General Assembly."
Rahman's diplomatic career began in 1979. He served in Bangladesh's Permanent Mission to the UN and held senior positions in the UN Secretariat. He was an Assistant to the President of the 41st Session and worked within the UNCTAD system.
Khalilur Rahman will assume his duties in early September, after the official opening of the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly.
