The United States does not rule out the option of conducting an operation to capture Raul Castro, one of the leaders of the Cuban revolution and former head of state, according to The New York Times citing sources.
Earlier, US media reported on the preparation of charges against the 95-year-old Castro, possibly related to the 1996 downing of two planes belonging to the "Brothers to the Rescue" exile organization by Cuban Air Force.
The NYT recalls that in January 2026, Washington used federal charges against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro as a basis for intervention and his detention. US officials do not exclude applying the "Venezuela scenario" in Cuba.
However, some sources believe this option may not be approved by the US leadership. Nevertheless, the threat of possible detention could force Havana to make concessions to Washington.
